A BRIEF HISTORY of the ga west presbytery

Christ-Centered, Self-Sustaining and Growing Church

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) is managed or governed along four levels of jurisdictions namely: the Congregational level, the District level, the Presbytery level and the General Assembly (National/Head Office) level. Therefore, in an ascending order, a Presbytery is at the third of the four levels of jurisdictions or governance structure of the Church. A Presbytery’s decision making body; the Presbytery Session, is next to the highest decision making body of the Church known as the General Assembly. A Presbytery in the PCG is equivalent to a Regional Administration in Ghana’s Politico-Social governance structure. Currently, there are 20 Presbyteries in the PCG made up of 18 Presbyteries in Ghana and two overseas Presbyteries.

Ga Presbytery, one of the Presbyteries in Ghana and out of which the Ga West Presbytery has been carved, is one of the oldest and arguably the leading Presbytery in the PCG. The GA WEST PRESBYTERY is the 21st Presbytery to be erected in the history of the PCG. Geographically, the Ga West Presbytery (which has been carved-out of the Ga Presbytery) covers all PCG Churches lying to the West of the main Accra-Nsawam road and heading towards Kasoa in the Central Presbytery (Region).

Ga Presbytery, one of the Presbyteries in Ghana and out of which the Ga West Presbytery has been carved, is one of the oldest and arguably the leading It also covers some Congregations and Preaching Posts/Points which hitherto were in the Ga Presbytery’s ‘Ga West Mission field but which now fall within the Ga West Presbytery’s geographical demarcation. The desire and attempt to carve another Presbytery out of the Ga Presbytery after the Dangme-Tongu Presbytery was carved out of the then, Ga and Adangme Presbytery in 1972, dates back to about 35 years (if not more than that). However, in the past, the cases put forward for the carving of a new Presbytery or Presbyteries out of the Ga Presbytery were either not well packaged or were procedurally flawed. Today, with hindsight, one can only say that perhaps, the time was just not ripe then. But, finally here we are, in the fullness of time, the baby (Ga West Presbytery) is born with Kaneshie as the Head Station. Hurray! The origin of the Ga West Presbytery can be traced to the Rev. Dr. G. Nii Noi Odonkor’s administration as Chairperson of Ga Presbytery. In his annual Chairperson’s address to the 2014 Presbytery Session held at the Presbyterian Women’s Centre, Abokobi from 26th April to 1st May, 2014, Rev. Dr. Odonkor made a strong and convincing case for the creation of two new Presbyteries out of the Ga Presbytery anchored on evangelism, Church growth and efficient administration. The Session unanimously accepted the idea and remitted same to the 14th General Assembly held at the Ramseyer Training Centre, Abetifi in the Kwahu Presbytery from 15th – 21st August, 2014.

In all, about 30 separate/ joint central and sub-committee meetings were held to ensure the successful erection of the Ga West Presbytery. Some of the programmes organized to herald the erection of the Ga West Presbytery include; a Breakfast Meeting and Inauguration of the Ga West Presbytery (GAWEP) Club 100 held on Wednesday 25th May, 2016 at SunLodge Hotel, Tesano and a Prayer, Praise & Bonfire Night held at the forecourt of the Kaneshie Congregation on Saturday 11th June, 2016, the eve of the erection of the Presbytery. At a special Ga (Ga West) Presbytery Session meeting held on Saturday 9th April, 2016, at the Kaneshie Congregation, the first officers and Lay Representative of the Ga West Presbytery were elected. The foundation officers elected were Rev. Daniel Kwasi Amoako Nyarko (Chairperson of the Presbytery) and Rev. Philip Nii Annan-Nai (Clerk of the Presbytery). Mrs. Sarah Mildred Addo was elected Lay Representative to the General Assembly Council. Today, the words of the Prophet Habakkuk in Habakkuk 2:3 have come alive. Indeed, for the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end, it shall speak and not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. Again, the words of the hymn writer in stanza two of the Presbyterian hymn 115, is apt for the coming into being of the Ga West Presbytery.
